Events occur throughout our lives which can have a major impact on our mental health and wellbeing. Our system is wired up to store and remember negative experience to protect us but this can form a blueprint for our self esteem and internal voice.
Failures, criticisms, humiliations, injuries and accidents from early childhood onwards… these all create types of psychological trauma… and worse still if there was chaos, abuse, neglect and fear in your childhood this causes developmental trauma or C-PTSD. In these instances changes to the structure in your developing young brain can prevent you as an adult making the authentic connections with others. This can lead to depression and other mental health struggles impacting on all aspects of your life. It may also lead to addictions, self harming and increases in suicidal ideation.
It is now known in the field of trauma that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) have a significant impact on not just longterm mental wellbeing but also physical wellbeing. In extreme cases with an ACE score of 6 or more analysis of long term data collected has shown it can lead to a decrease in life expectancy by 20 years.
When working with traumatic experiences it is important we have what is called a tri-phasic approach. Firstly building relationship to enhance safety, support stabilisation and develop resourcing techniques for calming the nervous system. Secondly; processing and accepting the traumatic experience through trauma specialist practices such as EMDR and other mind-body therapies and finally integration and moving on; building a healthy attachment style, able to experience intimacy, face healthy challenges and not be fearful of normal life experiences and connections.
Modern neuropsychotherapy practices such as EMDR and Brainspotting work rapidly to help your brain process trauma events. They unlock your brains own neuroplasticity and capacity for healing so you feel the changes take place each session. Different coaching and resilience techniques are also applied to help build and grow boundaries and positive selfcare habits. Together we can unlock your greatest healing potential.
